Bleed & safe area FAQ

Bleed is extra artwork that extends past the trim line so backgrounds run fully to the edge after cutting. Without it, slight cutting shifts can leave thin white slivers. The standard is one-eighth inch (about 0.125 in) per side.
It is the margin inside the trim where you keep important text and logos, so nothing gets clipped if the cut shifts slightly. Keeping content about one-eighth inch in from the trim is a safe default.
Yes. Send your content and we’ll build a print-ready file with correct bleed, margins, and color setup — it’s part of how we work.
How to calculate bleed and safe area for print
The rule of thumb for most printed pieces is simple: add one-eighth inch (0.125") of bleed to every side, and keep text and logos at least one-eighth inch inside the trim line. Bleed gives the cutter room to trim into solid artwork instead of leaving white slivers, and the safe margin protects your content if the cut drifts slightly the other way.
The math behind the calculator is just as plain. Build size = finished size + (2 × bleed), because bleed gets added to both sides of each dimension. Safe area = finished size − (2 × safe margin), pulled in from every edge. Leave the bleed and safe-margin fields alone and the tool uses the industry-standard 0.125" for both.
Here’s a worked example with a standard 3.5" × 2" business card. Build size: 3.5 + 0.25 = 3.75" wide and 2 + 0.25 = 2.25" tall, so you design at 3.75" × 2.25". Safe area: 3.5 − 0.25 = 3.25" by 2 − 0.25 = 1.75" — keep every word inside that box and run backgrounds to the full build edge. Rather skip the setup?
