How to calculate EDDM postage costs
EDDM postage math is about as simple as USPS pricing gets: one flat rate per piece, no mailing list to buy, no per-address sorting. The rule of thumb — budget roughly a quarter per mailbox. Because EDDM Retail charges the same per-piece rate whether your postcard covers one carrier route or ten, the only two numbers that matter are how many doors you want to reach and today’s rate.
The calculator multiplies your piece count by the per-piece rate: pieces × rate = estimated postage. Leave the rate field blank and it uses $0.245 per piece — the current EDDM Retail ballpark; check USPS for today’s exact rate before you lock in a budget. The result is postage only. Design and printing are separate, quoted on size, stock, and quantity.
A worked example: mailing 5,000 pieces at $0.245 each comes to about $1,225.00 in postage. One thing to plan for — USPS carrier routes come in fixed sizes, so your final count lands wherever whole routes add up, not on a round number.
