Minnesota fish house rules: removal dates, ID lettering and reflectors
A Minnesota fish house left on the ice needs a shelter license, the owner’s ID in two inch letters, reflectors if it stays out overnight, and a ride off the lake by a fixed deadline at the end of the season. Here are the 2027 removal dates first, then the rest of the rules, straight from the statute and the DNR.
2027 fish house removal dates
Minnesota sets the inland deadlines by formula in Minn. Stat. 97C.355, subd. 7: the first Monday in March south of a line across the state, and the third Monday in March north of it. Border waters run on their own dates.
| Water | Deadline |
|---|---|
| Inland waters south of the line | Monday, March 1, 2027 |
| Inland waters north of the line | Monday, March 15, 2027 |
| Minnesota and Iowa border waters | February 20 |
| Minnesota and Wisconsin border waters | March 1 |
| Minnesota and North or South Dakota border waters | March 5 |
| Minnesota and Canada border waters | March 31 |
We computed the 2027 inland dates from the statute. The border water dates are the ones the DNR lists on its ice fishing shelters page. The commissioner can change dates by rule, and the DNR announces the deadlines every February, so check that page before you plan the move.
The deadline is about unattended shelters. After the date, a shelter may not sit on the ice unattended between midnight and one hour before sunrise, so in practice it comes off the ice with you at night. And a public access is not a parking lot: the DNR prohibits storing or leaving shelters there.
Where the north and south line runs
The line follows highway rights-of-way: U.S. Highway 10 east from the North Dakota border to Highway 34, Highway 34 east to Highway 200, Highway 200 east to U.S. Highway 2, and Highway 2 east to the Wisconsin border. Every inland lake around Buffalo, St. Cloud, Brainerd, Mille Lacs and the Twin Cities is south of it and runs on the first Monday deadline. Upper Red Lake and Lake Vermilion are north of it.
The ID every fish house needs
Under subdivision 1, every shelter on the ice, including dark houses and fish houses, must show one of three things on the outside in characters at least two inches high. The only exception is a portable shelter while someone is with it (more on that below).
- Owner’s name and address
The most lettering of the three, two or three lines. It also puts your name and home address on a building that sits alone on a lake for weeks.
- Driver’s license number
One line, but it is your license number on public display all winter.
- MDNR number
“MDNR#” followed by the identification number the DNR issued you. One line, and the only option that does not advertise who you are or where you live. It is the one we would letter.
The statute asks that the ID be legible; the DNR says readily visible from the outside. Two inches is the minimum, not a target, and bigger letters read from farther away. Put the ID where someone walking up to the door will see it and where a drift will not bury it. If people approach the house from more than one direction, letter more than one side.
Reflectors for houses left out overnight
Subdivision 7a: a fish house, dark house or shelter left on the ice overnight needs reflective material on each side, at least two square inches in total per side. Two square inches is less than a third of a business card. It is the legal floor. Lakes carry trucks and snowmobiles after dark, and more reflective area on every wall makes a house easier to see.
One shortcut: cut the ID itself from reflective vinyl, and that wall gets its reflective material in the same job. The other sides still need their own, at least two square inches each.
Shelter licenses, and when a portable needs one
- Non-portable shelters
Every non-portable shelter must be licensed, and the DNR counts wheeled fish houses as non-portable. The 2026 fee is $15 for residents and $37 for nonresidents, plus any issuing fee.
- License period
A shelter license runs from March 1 through April 30 of the following year, so this winter’s license covers the 2027 deadlines.
- Border waters
No shelter license is needed on border waters between Minnesota and Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota or South Dakota.
- Portable shelters
A portable is one that collapses, folds or comes apart for transport. It needs a license and ID only when it is left unattended, meaning everyone is more than 200 feet away. Without ID it may not be left unattended between midnight and sunrise.
The rest of the rules on the ice
- Door
A dark house or fish house in use must have a door that opens from the outside.
- Spacing
No shelter within ten feet of an existing one.
- Burning
Burning a structure on the ice takes the commissioner’s permission, and the owner must remove what is left.
- Trash
Since 2023, trash and waste have to stay in a container secured to the shelter or vehicle, never on the ice or in the water.
- Ice
The DNR does not measure ice thickness. It tells anglers to check it at least every 150 feet.
Miss the deadline and the house can be gone
This part of the statute has teeth. A conservation officer must confiscate a shelter left on the ice in violation of the deadline, and may remove, burn or destroy it. Its contents are held for 60 days, then kept by the DNR or sold. Owners can also be cited and face a civil penalty. The same confiscation rules reach structures left on a state public access more than 48 hours past the deadlines.
Late-season ice is the other reason not to cut it close: the DNR notes that county sheriffs may restrict vehicles on the ice when conditions turn dangerous. Plan the move for the weekend before, not the night of.
ID lettering that lasts a winter on the lake
We make fish house ID in cut outdoor vinyl, in a color that contrasts with the wall, two inches tall or larger, in plain block letters. Reflective vinyl covers the overnight rule, either as the lettering itself or as strips for the other walls. Apply it on a clean, dry wall in a heated garage before the house goes out; cold, frosty siding is where decals let go. A wheelhouse is a trailer, so the same vehicle graphics work that letters a work trailer applies.
Send us the ID line you want (name and address, license number or MDNR number), the wall color and how many sides, and we will proof it at size. We design in Buffalo, MN and produce with trusted print partners. One plain reminder: we print lettering, we do not enforce game and fish law. Nothing here is legal advice. The DNR and the Office of the Revisor of Statutes are the authorities, and the DNR updates its page every season.
Fish house FAQ
By the end of the day on Monday, March 1, 2027 on inland waters south of the Highway 10, 34, 200 and 2 line, and Monday, March 15, 2027 north of it. Border waters have their own dates: February 20 with Iowa, March 1 with Wisconsin, March 5 with the Dakotas and March 31 with Canada. The DNR can change dates by rule.
One of three things on the outside: the owner’s name and address, the owner’s driver’s license number, or MDNR# and the DNR identification number issued to the owner. Every shelter needs it except a portable while someone is with it.
At least two inches high, legible and readily visible from the outside. That is the minimum; bigger letters read from farther away.
Only when it is left unattended, meaning every occupant is more than 200 feet away. A portable without ID may not be left unattended between midnight and sunrise.
If it stays on the ice overnight, at least two square inches of reflective material on each side of the structure.
Yes. The DNR treats wheeled fish houses as non-portable, and every non-portable shelter needs a license. The 2026 fee is $15 for residents and $37 for nonresidents, plus any issuing fee. Border waters with Wisconsin, Iowa and the Dakotas are the exception.
A conservation officer must confiscate it and may remove, burn or destroy it. The contents are held for 60 days, then kept by the DNR or sold, and the owner can be cited and face a civil penalty.
