Pixels, DPI & print size FAQ

Need this done for you? We handle Graphic Design for businesses across Buffalo and the Twin Cities.

How do I convert pixels to inches?

Divide the pixel dimension by the DPI. For example, 1800 px at 300 DPI is 6 inches. Flip the direction to go from inches to pixels.

What DPI should I use?

300 DPI is standard for close-up print like cards and brochures. Large-format signs and banners look great at 100–150 because you view them from farther away.

My image is too few pixels — now what?

Either print it smaller or have the art recreated or vectorized. Our resolution checker shows the effective DPI at your target size.

How the math works

How to convert pixels to inches for print

The rule of thumb: divide pixels by DPI to get inches. DPI (dots per inch) is how many pixels of image data land on each inch of paper. For pieces you hold in your hand — business cards, brochures, flyers — aim for 300 DPI. Banners and signs viewed from several feet away look sharp at 100–150 DPI, which is why the same file can print much larger in wide format.

This calculator runs the same two formulas a designer would: pixels ÷ DPI = inches, and inches × DPI = pixels (rounded to the nearest whole pixel). Leave the DPI field at 300 — the close-up print standard — or type in any value that fits your project.

A worked example: a photo 3600 pixels wide at 300 DPI prints about 12 inches wide, because 3600 ÷ 300 = 12. Drop the DPI to 150 for a banner and that same file covers 24 inches. Going the other way, an 18" × 24" poster at 150 DPI calls for a 2700 × 3600 pixel file. Already have a file and a target size in mind? Our image resolution checker grades it in one step.
