Sign square footage FAQ

Need this done for you? We handle Wide Format & Signage for businesses across Buffalo and the Twin Cities.

How do I calculate sign square footage?

Multiply width by height in the same units. In inches, divide the result by 144 to get square feet. The calculator handles the conversion for you.

Is bigger always more expensive?

Generally yes — material and printing scale with area — but substrate, finishing, and quantity matter too. Use the price-per-square-foot field for a rough idea, then ask us for exact pricing.

What sizes can you print?

From small yard signs to large building banners, through our wide-format and vendor network. Tell us the finished size you need.

How the math works

How to calculate sign square footage

The rule of thumb: a sign’s square footage is simply width times height. The only trip-up is units — signs and banners are priced by the square foot, but most of us measure in inches. Measure both dimensions in the same unit and convert once at the end.

Measuring in feet? Multiply width by height and you’re done. Measuring in inches? Multiply width by height, then divide by 144, since there are 144 square inches in a square foot. That’s exactly what the calculator does — it converts each inch measurement to feet by dividing by 12, multiplies the two together, and rounds to two decimals. Add an optional price per square foot and it multiplies that rate by the area for a quick ballpark.

A worked example: a 48" × 24" banner. 48 ÷ 12 = 4 ft and 24 ÷ 12 = 2 ft, so the area is 4 × 2 = 8 ft². Type a sample rate of $8 per square foot into the optional field and the estimate comes to $64.00 — the rate is whatever you enter, not a quoted price.
