A good rule is about 1 inch of letter height for every 10 feet of distance at the edge of legibility, and roughly 1 inch per 4 feet for strong, attention-grabbing readability. So a 3-inch letter reads to about 30 feet.

How to calculate sign viewing distance
The industry rule of thumb is simple: every 1 inch of letter height buys you about 10 feet of readable distance. That’s the outer edge of legibility — the point where someone with good eyesight can still make out the words. For text that grabs attention instead of merely being decipherable, plan on 1 inch of height for every 4 feet of distance.
The calculator applies both rules directly. Multiply your letter height in inches by 10 and you get the maximum readable distance in feet; multiply it by 4 and you get the strong-impact range — the zone where the message reads instantly, even at a glance.
Worked example: a sign with 4-inch letters stays legible out to about 40 feet and hits hardest inside 16 feet — fine for a storefront walk-up, too small to catch drivers moving at road speed.
