How to calculate wall mural square footage and panels
Rule of thumb: multiply the wall’s width by its height in feet to get the square footage, then plan on one vertical panel — installers call it a drop — for roughly every 4.5 feet of wall width on standard 54-inch material. Murals don’t print as one giant sheet; they go up in floor-to-ceiling strips hung side by side, with about an inch of overlap at every seam.
This calculator runs the same math a print shop does. Square footage is simply width × height. For the panel count, it converts your wall width to inches, divides by the material width minus one inch (the inch each seam loses to overlap), and rounds up to a whole panel. Material width defaults to 54 inches, with 48- and 60-inch options for other media.
Worked example: a 20 ft × 9 ft wall is 180 ft² of coverage. Twenty feet is 240 inches; 240 ÷ 53 = 4.5, which rounds up to 5 drops of 54-inch material.
