How to calculate vinyl for window graphics
Rule of thumb: measure the glass, not the frame. Take the width and height of each pane in inches, then plan on roughly 10% more vinyl than glass — the extra covers trimming, squaring up the print, and lining things up during install.
The math is simple. Width in inches × height in inches, divided by 144, gives the square footage of one window. Multiply by the number of windows for your total glass area, then multiply by 1.1 to build in that 10% waste allowance — that’s the exact formula this calculator runs. Choosing solid or perforated film changes what you can see through the glass, not the footage; both are sized the same way.
Worked example: three storefront windows, each 48" wide and 60" tall. 48 × 60 = 2,880 square inches; divide by 144 and each window is 20 ft². Three windows make 60 ft² of glass, and adding 10% brings it to about 66 ft² of vinyl — the same numbers the tool returns.
