How to calculate book spine width
Spine width comes down to two numbers: how many sheets of paper are in the book, and how thick each sheet is. Every two pages of a perfect-bound interior share one sheet, so a 120-page book is really a 60-sheet stack. Multiply that stack by the paper’s caliper — the thickness of a single sheet — and you’ve got the spine.
That’s exactly what this calculator does: spine width = (interior pages ÷ 2) × caliper. It uses typical calipers for common stocks — 0.0045" per sheet for 60# offset, 0.005" for 70# offset, 0.0035" for 80# gloss text, and 0.0045" for 100# gloss text. Gloss sheets are pressed smooth in manufacturing, which is why an 80# gloss text sheet ends up thinner than a 60# offset sheet.
Worked example: a 120-page catalog on 60# offset is 120 ÷ 2 = 60 sheets, and 60 × 0.0045" = 0.27" — about 6.9 mm.
