Print Paper Mass Calculator
How much do 2,000 flyers or a stack of event programs weigh? Enter the flat sheet size, the paper’s gsm, sheets per copy and how many copies. You’ll get the paper weight in pounds and kilograms.
Quick answer: Paper mass = flat area in square meters × gsm × physical sheets. Divide grams by 1,000 for kilograms, or by 453.59237 for pounds. Printing both sides does not double the physical sheet count.

How the math works
An 8.5 × 11-inch sheet has an area of (8.5 × 0.0254) × (11 × 0.0254) = 0.06032246 square meters. At 80 gsm, one sheet has about 4.83 grams of paper. A run of 2,000 one-sheet flyers is about 9.65 kg / 21.28 lb of stock, before ink, finishing and packaging.
The formula is the standard one (DS Smith publishes it). Always use the size before folding: one sheet folded into four pages is still one sheet. For a stapled booklet, get the sheet count from the booklet page calculator first.
If the cover and inside pages are different papers, figure each one separately and add them. Have a US weight like 80 lb text? The paper weight converter turns it into gsm. The paper mass guide walks through folded pieces and booklets.
This is paper only, without ink, binding, envelopes or boxes. For postage, weigh a finished piece.
| Flat sheet size | gsm | Physical sheets | Approximate stock mass |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8.5 × 11 in | 80 | 500 | 2.41 kg / 5.32 lb |
| 8.5 × 11 in | 80 | 2,000 | 9.65 kg / 21.28 lb |
| 4 × 6 in | 300 | 1,000 | 4.65 kg / 10.24 lb |

US basis weight describes a specified ream at a category-specific basic sheet size. A smaller finished sheet or a different number of sheets weighs something else. Use gsm and actual sheet dimensions to calculate your run.
Enter the unfolded paper size. An 8.5 by 11-inch sheet folded in half still contains the full 8.5 by 11 inches of paper. Count physical sheets rather than the number of printed pages.
No. It estimates paper stock mass only. Ink, binding, envelopes and other additions change the finished weight, while mailing eligibility also depends on size, thickness and preparation. Weigh the actual finished mail piece.
