About the product

At an outdoor event, the tent is the sign

From the parking lot, plain white canopies all look the same. A printed tent fixes that. We design custom canopy tents in Buffalo, MN. They suit farmers market and craft fair vendors, breweries, realtors, schools and booster clubs, churches, nonprofits and county fair exhibitors. Our manufacturing partners make them: a dye-sublimation printed top on an aluminum pop-up frame, with printed walls to match and add-ons like a tent flag kit and sandbags.

  • Three frame sizes

    10x10, 10x15 and 10x20 ft aluminum frames.

  • Printed peaks and valance

A full-color canopy top, plus walls printed to match.

  • No installer needed

A pop-up frame with telescopic legs that packs into the included carry bag; the 10x10 adds ropes and stakes.

Height depends on the leg setting. Tops are 6 oz tent fabric (600 × 600 denier), dye-sublimation printed, scratch resistant and weather resistant (waterproof coated fabric). Walls are the same 6 oz tent fabric, dye-sublimation printed. The frame is 40 mm aluminum hex with a 1 mm wall. On the 10x10, the print covers all four peaks and the valance panels, and our manufacturing partner advises taking the printed top off before you collapse the frame.

Full walls fasten with sewn-in hook-and-loop tabs; on the 10x10 and 10x20 they print on one side. Half walls hang from a support pole. Order up to four full walls, and replace walls later when the message changes.

How to choose

Plan the whole booth, not just the tent

Start with the space you were assigned, because the assembled frame has to fit inside it. The 10x15 and 10x20 suit double spaces, brewery patios, sponsor and team tents, and booths that need a demo area as well as a table.

  • Valance: say who you are

People read it straight on from the aisle. Your name, big, in a color that contrasts with the canopy.

  • Peaks: a logo, not a paragraph

Seen from across the lot and over other tents. One logo or word per peak; phone numbers won't read up there.

  • Back wall: your backdrop

Hides whatever is behind you and holds the menu, price list or QR code at eye level.

  • Side walls: half or full

Half walls keep the booth open to foot traffic; full walls add shade or privacy.

Then match the rest of the booth. A printed table throw fills the front; size it with the table throw calculator. A feather flag can stand taller than the tent: the frame is 124.5 to 137 in tall, so a 14 or 18 ft flag clears it and a 9 ft flag doesn't. A retractable banner or vinyl banner carries the details. For full lists, see our craft fair booth checklist and county fair signage checklist, or trade show booth sizes for indoor home shows and expos.

Minnesota specifics

Wind, permits and flame certificates

Wind and weights

A canopy catches wind like a sail. Section 3103.9 of the 2020 Minnesota State Fire Code requires tents to withstand the weather without collapsing, and the State Fire Marshal reads that as rain, snow and wind loads.

  • How much weight

Your canopy maker's guidance comes first. Without it, UC Irvine's environmental health and safety office recommends 40 lbs per leg on a 10x10, and more in high wind.

  • Your event may set the number

The Maple Grove Farmers Market's 2024 vendor rules required 25 lbs on every canopy leg, banned stakes, and said vendors without enough weight would be asked to take their canopies down. Check your event's current rules.

  • How to attach it

UC Irvine's safety office also says to strap sandbag weights vertically to the legs, and to avoid tables, coolers, vehicles and concrete blocks as anchors. If your event's rules say otherwise, follow the event.

  • Our sandbags

Sold as a set of four; each bag holds 50 lbs. Sand is not included. If your frame has more than four legs, plan weight for every one.

When the wind turns gusty, take the tent down.

Tent permits

Under the Minnesota State Fire Code, a pop-up canopy is a tent, walls or not. The current (2020) code requires a permit for a tent over 400 square feet (sections 3103.2 and 105.6.47). A single 10x10 (100 sq ft), 10x15 (150 sq ft) or 10x20 (200 sq ft) is generally under that. Tents open on all sides don't need that permit up to 700 square feet if they stand 12 ft from structures and other tents. Open-sided tents set side by side without a 12 ft gap are added together toward that 700 square feet.

Cities can add triggers: Shakopee's tent handout requires a permit for any tent with cooking equipment or heat sources in or near it. The state also bars open flames and cooking devices inside a tent or within 20 ft of it while it's open to the public, unless the fire code official approves (3107.4). It also keeps generators 20 ft away (3107.16) and requires NO SMOKING signs (3107.3). Minnesota has started rulemaking toward the 2024 International Fire Code, so rules and section numbers may change. The State Fire Marshal advises checking with the local fire code official before you set up.

Flame-resistance certificates

The code names one test for tent fabric: NFPA 701, Test Method 2. Section 3104 covers all tents, temporary or permanent (3104.1), not just the ones that need a permit. The State Fire Marshal says it requires tents to be flame resistant to that test, proven by an approved label on the tent or a certificate from an approved testing laboratory. Section 3104.2 also requires the certificate before a permit is granted, and 3104.3 requires a permanently affixed label naming the size and fabric. Some canopy makers also list CPAI-84, a camping-tent specification; Minnesota's code text names NFPA 701.

Venues ask even without a permit. The Minnesota State Fair's 2022 rules required flame-proofed tents with a letter certifying annual treatment, and Saint Paul's fire safety guidance for exhibits requires proof of flame-retardant treatment for tents and canopies.

Before you order: ask the venue or fire marshal what proof they need. We don't list a flame rating for these tents, so if you need a label or certificate, tell us first and we'll check with our manufacturing partner; we won't promise a certificate we haven't seen. This is a general summary, not legal advice, and the local fire code official has the final word.

How ordering works

From sketch to setup

  1. Tell us about the event. Tent size, date, frame or top only, and whether the venue wants a flame certificate.
  2. We lay it out on the production template. Each peak, the valance and every wall. No artwork yet? We design it from scratch.
  3. You approve a proof of every panel before anything prints.
  4. We produce it on the date confirmed with your quote.
  5. It ships to you, ready to set up.

FAQ

Event tent FAQ

What comes with a custom event tent?

The frame, the printed canopy top and a carry bag, plus ropes and stakes on the 10x10. Walls, sandbags, a wheeled bag and a flag kit are add-ons. The printed top can also be ordered alone for the same 40 mm hex frame. It may not fit another brand's frame, so tell us what frame you have before you order.

Do you set up or install the tent?

No. These are made to go up without an installer: the frame has telescopic legs and travels in its carry bag. We are happy to talk through your site and setup before you order.

Should I get a 10x10, 10x15 or 10x20?

Match the frame to the space you were assigned. Assembled, a 10x10 is 120 by 120 in, a 10x15 is 175 by 120 in and a 10x20 is 235 by 120 in. A 10x15 or 10x20 suits a double space, a brewery patio or a booth that needs a demo area as well as a table.

Is the tent fabric flame-resistant, and can I get a certificate?

We do not list a flame rating for these tents. Minnesota's fire code calls for tent fabric that meets NFPA 701 Test Method 2, shown by a label or a lab certificate, and venues such as the Minnesota State Fair ask for proof. If you need a certificate, tell us before you order and we will check with our manufacturing partner. We will not promise a certificate we have not seen.

Do I need a permit for a 10x10 tent in Minnesota?

Generally not for one tent. The current (2020) Minnesota State Fire Code requires a permit for tents over 400 square feet, and a single 10x10, 10x15 or 10x20 is under that. Cities can add rules, especially for cooking, so check with the local fire code official.

How long does a custom tent take?

Most orders run a few business days after proof approval; we confirm the date with your quote. Tell us your event date up front and we will tell you with the quote whether that date works.
