How ordering works

From idea to a sign on the wall

  1. Tell us where it goes. A photo of the wall, window or spot, and what the sign has to say.
  2. Size it to the distance. We work out the letter height, or try the letter height calculator and the sign viewing distance calculator yourself.

  3. Check the permit. Permanent exterior signs often need one. Our Wright County and West Metro permit guides show who to ask.

  4. Approve one proof showing the layout, the size and the material, before anything is made.
  5. It is made and delivered, finished and ready to put up.

Production time: most printed signs, banners and flags run a few business days after proof approval, and we confirm the date with your quote. Made-to-order pieces such as ADA signs, plaques and dimensional letters depend on the material, and we confirm a ship date with your proof.

Signs for Buffalo and nearby towns

FAQ

Custom sign FAQ

What kinds of signs does SHIFT Design make?

Yard and campaign signs, vinyl and pole banners, rigid signs, aluminum parking and property signs, ADA and braille signs, lobby signs and dimensional letters, plaques, A-frames, feather flags, window and wall graphics, retractable banners, trade show displays, event tents and magnetic signs. Every one is designed in-house and proofed before it is made.

Do you install signs?

We install window graphics and wall graphics on site, and vehicle lettering and spot graphics go on at your place of business. Quick lettering and decals can go on outdoors, weather permitting. More involved graphics need a covered, climate controlled shop. Rigid, metal, ADA and lobby signs and plaques arrive finished and ready to mount, made to go up without a sign installer, and banners come hemmed and grommeted. We do not install permanent building signage, and we do not file sign permits.

Do I need a permit for a sign?

Often, for a permanent exterior sign, and many cities also limit temporary banners. Buffalo and the other Wright County cities each set their own limits on size, height and placement, and so do the West Metro cities. Our permit guides show who to ask. Bring us whatever the city tells you and we build the sign to that spec.

How big should my sign be?

Big enough to read from where people will see it. The distance and the speed people pass at decide the letter height, so a sign along a highway needs far bigger letters than one on a lobby wall. Our letter height calculator and sign viewing distance calculator get you close, and we confirm the size on your proof.

What sign material holds up outdoors?

For a permanent outdoor sign, aluminum composite is the default: it stays flat and will not rust. Solid aluminum suits parking and regulatory signs. Coroplast is right for yard signs that only need a season or two. Keep PVC indoors or under cover. We match the material to where the sign lives and how long it has to last.

How much does a custom sign cost?

It depends on the size, the material and the quantity, so we quote each sign on its own. Send us the details and we will send a free quote, usually within one business day.

How long do signs take?

Most printed signs, banners and flags run a few business days after proof approval, and we confirm the date with your quote. Made-to-order pieces such as ADA signs, plaques and dimensional letters depend on the material, and we confirm a ship date with your proof.
